Martin Currie Australia launches ‘Active Insights’ strategy
Franklin Templeton’s Martin Currie Australia has launched its ‘Active Insights’ strategy which will aim to capture outperformance without taking on “unnecessary style, factor or sector risk”.
This would include a process leveraging forward-looking fundamental insights with the assumption that day-to-day active ownership activity should sit with those who “know the companies best”, such as a team of research analysts and portfolio managers, the firm said.
“Unlike ‘traditional’ quant and passive funds that rely on backward-looking signals, this strategy utilises Martin Currie’s forward-looking and, on the ground, fundamental insights. This analysis is undertaken by our 18-strong investment team with 20 years on average of industry experience,” Reece Birtles, Chief Investment Officer, Martin Currie Australia, said.
“Our team also captures our best of breed in-house fundamental ESG analysis, engagement and proxy voting, which is also integrated deeply into our investment process and portfolio construction.”
According to Birtles, the ‘active insights’ strategy would also offer a way to manage style and factor bias, something which could not be replicated by systematic, smart beta strategies.
The new strategy, which according to the firm would be suited to the Your Super Your Future (YSYF) and would be also available as a focused separately managed account (SMA) for direct investors, would offer a balance between alpha, tracking error and turnover.
Martin Currie managed over $31 billion in assets under management (AUM), and $8 billion in Australian equities, as of 30 June 2022.
