Super fund returns remain consistent despite uncertainty

The latest analysis from superannuation research house, SuperRatings, has determined that super funds have managed a consistent run of positive returns to the end of February, with the recent spike in geopolitical uncertainty likely to disrupt this trajectory till the end of the financial year.
SuperRatings estimated that the median balanced option rose 1.1 per cent over the month of February, with the median growth option expected to return 1.2 per cent and the median capital stable option at 0.8 per cent.
Pension returns were also in a similar position, with the median balanced and growth options both at 1.3 per cent and the median capital stable option at 0.9 per cent.
SuperRatings Director, Kirby Rappell, said the immediate reaction from share markets to the outbreak of violence in the Middle East is already leaving expectations for super returns much to be desired.
“The events currently occurring in the Middle East have brought fresh uncertainty to markets already feeling the pressure of expectations surrounding artificial intelligence,” he said.
“While we have yet to fully see how returns will respond, it is worth remembering that when markets are more turbulent, the focus should be on long-term strategy and outcomes to ensure you reach your retirement goals.
“For any members that are concerned about their fund’s performance it may be helpful to seek advice before making a decision. Advice services are often available through the fund, or members can seek professional financial advice, just remember to confirm what costs, if any, are involved before proceeding with the advice.”
The median balanced option is estimated to have dropped by -1.6 per cent over March, while the median growth option is expected to lose -2.0 per cent in the same period. The more “defensively positioned” capital stable option is also estimated to fall by -0.9 per cent since the beginning of the month.

Why are we discussing monthly returns on super, a very long term investment. What a useless article.
