CPA Australia announces next CEO

Former corporate lawyer Chris Freeland has been appointed CPA Australia’s next chief executive.
Freeland assumes the reins from outgoing chief Andrew Hunter, who earlier this year announced his intention to pursue new career opportunities in Europe.
Hunter, who will support Freeland over a transition period, will have served six years as CEO when he leaves the professional accounting body early next year.
A former corporate lawyer and barrister, Freeland has for the last seven years served as managing partner of Baker McKenzie’s Australia operations and managing director of its Asia Pacific division, overseeing the global law firm’s 17 offices in Asia Pacific.
CPA acknowledged Freeland’s expertise in “corporate change and transformation”, alongside his “significant community engagement experience in the non-profit sector, most notably in arts, social welfare and education” (including his chairing of the Sydney Film Festival and NSW Film and TV Advisory Committee), for which he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia medal.
Freeland is also noted for his considerable consulting experience, culminating in a stint as general manager of The Boston Consulting Group’s Australia and New Zealand arm.
CPA Australia’s recently appointed chair and president, Dale Pinto, recognised Freeland’s “proven track record of strategic leadership and growth, and a wealth of experience in global professional services”.
“Chris is a highly experienced CEO who brings a wealth of global expertise and fresh perspectives that will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success of CPA Australia.
Freeland, Pinto added, is “poised to steer our organisation towards new heights”.
CPA Australia is Australia’s primary professional accounting body, counting more than 172,000 members in over 100 countries and regions. The Group’s core services include education, training, technical support and industry advocacy.
Freeland will commence as CPA Australia chief from 18 March 2024.
