The Life Insurance Code Compliance Committee (Life CCC) has appointed Anna Meulman as its new Consumer Member, replacing outgoing representative Alexandra Kelly after eight years in the role.

The watchdog, responsible for monitoring compliance with the Life Insurance Code of Practice and overseeing standards across the industry, announced on Friday that Meulman will join its three-member panel from 1 July.

Meulman is currently the Managing Lawyer at the Consumer Action Law Centre, where she leads a team that provides legal assistance to consumers and community workers on a range of matters, including insurance disputes, complaints handling, and claims-related issues.

“Anna brings a strong understanding of the issues affecting consumers, including vulnerable consumers, in the financial services sector,”Jan McClelland AM, chair of Life CCC, said.

“Her experience in consumer advocacy, complaints handling and legal assistance will be valuable as we continue our work monitoring compliance with the Code and promoting fair outcomes in the life insurance industry.”

Furthermore, Meulman played a role in the 2017 Financial Services Royal Commission, working on the examination of misconduct and systemic issues in banking, superannuation and insurance.

McClelland also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing Consumer Representative Alexandra Kelly.

“Alexandra has made a wonderful contribution to our work since the Life Insurance Code of Practice came into effect in 2017,” she said.

“Underpinned by a strong commitment to consumer advocacy and education, she helped ensure consumer perspectives are reflected in our work promoting and monitoring compliance with the Code.”

The Life CCC comprises three members: a Consumer Member appointed by the consumer members of the AFCA Board, an Industry Member appointed by the Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) and an independent Chair appointed jointly by AFCA and CALI.
