BUSSQ adds tech specialist to board

Industry superannuation fund BUSSQ has appointed technology and cyber security specialist Matthew Rowan as a Director to its Board of Trustees.
The $7.42 billion Queensland-based fund announced on Wednesday that Rowan would replace former employer representative director Geoff Baguley, who resigned from the board in February.
Rowan boasts more than a decade of experience in the sector that includes him serving as an independent expert committee member since August 2023 at BUSSQ. In the role, he advised the fund on cyber security, technology strategy and information technology risk management.
As a trustee director, he will also sit on BUSSQ’s Audit and Risk Committee and Member Services Committee, giving him oversight of key governance and member-facing functions.
The appointment comes at a time when superannuation funds are facing heightened regulatory expectations around cyber security, operational resilience and the protection of member data.
BUSSQ chair Chris Taylor said Rowan’s appointment would strengthen the board’s capabilities as the fund navigates an increasingly complex technology environment.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to welcome Matthew to the Board,” Taylor said.
“He brings valuable experience and insights in technology and cyber risk that will further strengthen the Board’s skills and governance capability as we navigate an increasingly complex technical environment for our members.”
BUSSQ manages retirement savings for workers in Queensland’s building, construction and civil industries. The fund celebrated four decades of operation last year.
